I announced first thing in the morning that I needed the day to work. I could feel the due dates and copy lists piling up. Editorial cycles always seem to all move together. The sun was in and out all morning, so I cleaned up the kitchen, hung some laundry on the line outside, and sat down at my desk to get to work.
The girls occupied themselves filming a cooking show. They baked cookies and made me a “Harry Potter” grilled cheese for lunch. The wind blew all day, so I left the front and back doors open and my workspace was breezy.
When I wrapped up work in the afternoon, I felt exceedingly lighter, having filed more than half of what was due. We celebrated by taking cookies out to the deck couch to snack on while we read Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire.
In the evening, we had our first official back-to-school activities. Then we came home and made “Greek tacos,” which is a favorite quick meal that probably only makes sense to our family and the friends who taught it to us.
I had a glass of wine and listened to the new Billie Eilish single from the “Barbie” movie. It made me cry, and it is sad; but there is also a hopefulness in it that made me feel seen.
